Kamakeʻe Street – Halekauwila Street Intersection Improvements

Due to the wide pavement width of the existing roadway and location of attractive destinations across the street, concerns had been raised about pedestrian safety for the existing uncontrolled crosswalks at the intersection.  WOC assessed the existing crossings to determine the appropriate crossing treatment for this location.  The short length of this roadway segment and close proximity to adjacent signalized intersections limited the potential solutions.  Based on the completed assessment, WOC prepared design plans for the installation of a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) at this intersection to enhance pedestrian visibility across Kamakee Street.  Through the design of the project, WOC provided guidance to the Client and City agencies regarding the application of this relatively new technology for Oahu, and coordinated requested training for City staff on the operation and maintenance of the RRFB through a partnership with the distributor
