On September 13-14, 2016, a rare occurrence of heavy rains and flash flooding caused extensive damage along the slope immediately below the parking lot of the ‘Īao Valley State Monument. Prompted by concerns over the stability of the parking lot and safety of visitors, the park was closed and emergency remedial measures were implemented to stabilize the slope.
The team aimed to minimize the park’s closure time to reduce disruption of the park’s operations and revenue loss by phasing the repairs into interim and permanent repairs, allowing the park to reopen between the two phases.
The interim repairs involved installation of the slope toe protection system consisting of a rock and boulder revetment at the base of the river embankment and shotcrete along the face. The permanent repair was performed over the interim repairs and involved installing 304 soils nails and reinforced shotcrete facing.
The park reopened in April 2023.
